Tetra Pak creates recycling awareness through 1st environmental advocacy seminar with paper mills

Tetra Pak, the world leader in food processing and packaging solutions, joined hands with WWF-Pakistan to organise its first environmental advocacy seminar. Over 20 paper industry stakeholders including major paper mill owners in Sindh, beverage carton collectors and civil society organisation representatives, attended the seminar, talked on various industry related issues and learnt of innovative ways to recycle used beverage cartons for greater profitability.

The objective of the seminar was to strengthen the relationship between Tetra Pak Pakistan and paper industry stakeholders to drive the recycling rate of beverage cartons in Pakistan. Dirk Herrmann, Cluster Leader Environment, Greater Middle East, Ferid Ekmekcioglu, Cluster Recycling Technical Officer, Kashif Bhatti, Marketing Director and Jawad Ahmed, Environment Manager from Tetra Pak Pakistan, Marriyam Aurangzeb, Manager Corporate Relations WWF – Pakistan spoke at the seminar.

“Improving environmental performance is an essential part of our company’s business strategy, as it improves our overall performance while protecting the environment. A responsible business is an efficient business, and an efficient business is a sustainable business,” remarked Dirk Herrmann.

“The role of a progressive paper mill organization is crucial to the paper mill industry in Pakistan”, underlined Ferid,” By implementing process changes and equipment upgrades, mill owners can enhance yield and multiply profitability manifold”, he added.

“Innovation is an important part of today’s business, as it can enhance profitability significantly. The world today is fast moving toward multi-processing techniques to improve productivity and efficiency. With today’s seminar, we aim to create greater awareness of how trash out of a Tetra Pak carton can be converted into cash, contributing positively to both environment and economy at the same time,” remarked Kashif Bhatti.

At the end, Jawad Ahmed thanked seminar participants for their active participation and envisaged a continuation of this seminar series in Lahore and Islamabad. “Your collective efforts can make recycling a sustainable and profitable environmental initiative in Pakistan,” he added.

During the seminar, participants raised a lot of queries and sought advice on the utility of used beverage cartons in their processing lines. They also showed great interest in learning of options to effectively recycle poly-aluminium by-products.
