HBL pledges support of Football in Pakistan through Azad Foundation

Tuesday, 29th April 2014: HBL, Pakistan’s preeminent bank, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Azad Foundation for the uplift of underprivileged children through the promotion of football at the grassroots level in Pakistan. This MoU underscores HBL’s pledge to support and enable the Street Children Team Pakistan to place Pakistan on the world’s football stage. HBL and Azad Foundation also celebrated the success of Team Pakistan for winning the bronze medal in the Street Children Football World Cup held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in March/April 2014.

Mr. Nauman K. Dar, President and CEO, HBL, and Mr. Naveed Hasan Khan, Chairman of the Management Committee, Azad Foundation, signed the agreement. Also present at the occasion were Mr. Aman Aziz Siddqiui – Head of Strategy, HBL, Group heads and other senior management of both the organizations.

Speaking at the occasion, Mr. Nauman K. Dar stated, “HBL is a national institution that considers its duty to ensure the inclusion of all segments of our society, by enabling their dreams. Emirates is first airline to launch giant A380 double-decker service from Gatwick

Karachi/DUBAI –April 01, 2014: Emirates, a global connector of people and places, launches its A380 service to Gatwick today representing a 15 percent capacity boost for the UK’s South East.
Emirates was the first carrier to operate an all-A380 service out of Heathrow and is now the first to lead the service out of Gatwick – the same airport from which Emirates flew its inaugural UK flight 26 years ago.

Speaking about the launch, Hubert Frach, Emirates Divisional Senior Vice President Commercial Operations West said: “Six years after launch the Emirates A380 is still a customer magnet. Airports the world over are eager to have the Emirates A380 on their roster and today’s launch to London Gatwick is representative of that demand.”

In order to become A380 compliant, London Gatwick has invested £6.4m in new facilities, including the widening of three runway rapid exit taxiways and modifications to taxiways between the runway and the stand.

Guy Stephenson, Chief Commercial Officer of London Gatwick, said: “The A380 is one of the modern marvels of aviation engineering and as such we have dedicated part of Gatwick’s £1billion investment in transforming its infrastructure, creating a stand designed specifically with the world’s largest aircraft in mind. We are pleased to welcome a scheduled A380 service with Emirates, an airline that Gatwick has a long history with.”

“Emirates and Gatwick have once again been working closely together in the shared goal of providing the best possible passenger experience,” added Mr Frach. “It is fitting that Gatwick’s renewed spirit of ambition, as symbolised in their modernisation programme of recent years, will now be joined by Emirates’ own symbol of ambition and connectivity, the world’s largest passenger jet. Now, more people in the South East of England will be able to connect to more destinations and that is great news for holidaymakers and business travellers alike.”

Emirates is a strategic investor in the UK employing over 700 staff, and contributing £260m into the economies of the six hubs that it operates to. The launch of this A380 has not only allowed Gatwick to invest, but also supports suppliers such as Alpha LSG, who are now tasked with producing over 1,000 additional meals each week.

The airline’s commitment to the A380 will also guarantee jobs at companies like AIM Aviation, a British company based in the South East that supplies furniture for the A380 upper deck, including the iconic on-board lounge for First Class and Business Class passengers. Airbus itself employs around 10,000 people in the UK, and Emirates’ announcement last year of a further 50 new A380s guarantees those jobs for many years to come.

The daily A380 service will replace the existing afternoon Boeing 777-300ER flight EK 009, providing customers with an additional 9700 seats per month in both directions.
Emirates passengers flying the A380 will have access to a spacious aircraft, with a cabin that is two-and-a-half feet wider than a Boeing 777; experience a peaceful journey in the world’s quietest long-range jet; use the on-board Wi-Fi; indulge in world-class food and be entertained by the award-winning ice system with over 1,600 channels of entertainment.

First Class and Business Class passengers will have access to the A380’s on-board Lounge, with space to mingle whilst enjoying world-class delicacies. First Class passengers can experience the aircraft’s on-board signature Shower Spa, with a state-of-the-art shower system and Timeless Shower Spa kits, as well as the aircraft’s First Class Private Suites.

Emirates has the world’s largest A380 fleet with 47 of these aircraft serving 27 global destinations.

Peek Freans RIO brings Rio 2 to Pakistan

Karachi, April 08, 2014: Peek Freans RIO, the market leader in the cream biscuit category of Pakistan, fully in line with its tagline Fun Ka Daily Dose, is bringing Hollywood’s mega-hit film Rio 2 to Pakistan. The film is set to premiere on April 11. Rio 2 is the sequel to Rio The Movie released in 2011,which was also brought to Pakistan by Peek Freans RIO.

Rio 2 is a 3D computer-animated musical adventure-comedy that is expected to draw huge crowds. The title of the film refers to the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro, where the first film was set and where Rio 2 also begins. Emirates Brings the World’s Largest Passenger Aircraft to Dallas/Fort Worth

Living the spirit of ‘Everything is Bigger in Texas’, the Emirates A380 debut from October will also offer travellers best-in-class onboard experience

Karachi / Dubai, April 10 2014 – Emirates, a global connector of people and places, today announced it will bring its iconic Airbus A380 to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), launching the first scheduled A380 service at the airport.

On October 1st 2014, the world’s largest passenger aircraft will touch down at DFW with a daily service between Dallas/Fort Worth, the world’s fourth busiest airport, and the city of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. Dallas/Fort Worth will become the 28th international destination to which Emirates operates the aircraft, joining New York and Los Angeles which are already served by the A380.

“Emirates is committed to the people and places we serve, and we are bringing our flagship A380 to Dallas/Fort Worth by popular demand,” said Hubert Frach, Emirates’ Divisional Senior Vice President, Commercial Operations West. “The DFW area is at the heart of business, being home to 18 Fortune 500 companies. It is also home to a diverse population and the largest urban arts district in the U.S, and is the established number one leisure destination in Texas. With the A380, we are not only bringing our flagship product to serve our leisure and business customers, but also demonstrating our commitment and confidence in the economic and tourism potential of the region.”

Emirates started flying to Dallas/Fort Worth in 2012 with a Boeing 777-200LR, the first passenger carrier to fly nonstop to the Middle East from DFW. The introduction of the 489-seat A380, powered by U.S.-made GE GP7200 engines, is a direct response to demand with over 370,000 Emirates’ passengers travelling between Dallas and Dubai to date.

“The arrival of the A380 is a testament to the strength of the travel market here at Dallas/Fort Worth and the growing stature of DFW International Airport as a pre-eminent global hub,” said Sean Donohue, CEO of DFW Airport. “As the first scheduled A380 at DFW, it will provide over 83% more capacity on the DFW to Dubai route, which is especially important for travellers heading to the Middle East, India and Africa. As a mid-continent hub, DFW has outstanding connectivity and is just four hours from every major city in the continental U.S., Canada and Mexico.

“In 2012, not only did Emirates launch service to DFW, but Dallas started living by the mantra Big things happen here,” said Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings. “The arrival of the Emirates’ Airbus A380 is truly a ‘big thing’ for the Dallas-Fort Worth area and reinforces the growth in our region as well as the value that a carrier like Emirates brings to trade and tourism.”

“The A380 is big, and so is DFW Airport. It’s fitting for Emirates to bring its Airbus A380 to North Texas as we celebrate the 40th anniversary of DFW Airport and recognize its $31.6 billion economic impact in our region,” said Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price. “The new A380 service will allow us to create even more business connections from DFW to Dubai and beyond.”

DFW Airport is making its final preparations for the arrival of the Emirates A380 with the construction of a second level jet bridge in Terminal D and modifications to the airfield, ramps and taxiways. Terminal D opened in 2005 with A380 capabilities already built into its design, so the final additions to make DFW ready for the A380 are relatively minor.

The Emirates A380 is immensely popular with travellers all around the world. In the month of February, more than 800,000 people experienced a new way of flying when they boarded an Emirates A380.

Emirates passengers in all cabin classes can enjoy WiFi access on board, tune in to the industry-leading ice Digital Widescreen offering up to 1,600 channels of on-demand in-flight entertainment, and dine on gourmet-chef prepared meals, served by an international and multi-lingual cabin crew.

The Emirates First and Business Class experience takes pampering to another level, featuring two onboard Shower Spas available to First Class cabin passengers to freshen up at 40,000 feet; and the popular A380 Onboard Lounge which provides a relaxed social environment for First and Business Class travellers to exchange travel tales and talk business while sipping fine wines and cocktails and nibbling on hors d’oeuvres and delicacies prepared by five-star chefs. Bar staff begin serving drinks as soon as the aircraft reaches cruising altitude and are on hand all the way until descent.

In addition to award-winning products and services onboard the A380, Emirates’ hospitality begins before boarding the aircraft. First and Business Class travellers can also enjoy a complimentary chauffeur-drive service to and from the airport and access to 35 dedicated Emirates’ lounges at airports across its network.

Emirates’ A380 is a wide-bodied double decker aircraft with a capacity of 489 passengers including 14 First Class Private Suites, 76 lie-flat beds in Business Class and 399 spacious seats in Economy Class.
Powered by GP7200 engines which burn up to twenty percent less fuel per seat than its nearest competitor, Emirates’ A380s have lower carbon dioxide emissions and thirty percent better fuel efficiency than the ICAO global fleet average. This is the most significant advancement in reducing fuel consumption and emissions in four decades. Emirates also stands apart from the rest as the average age of the fleet is less than half that of many European airlines. Emirates is the largest operator of the A380 and continues to work closely with Airbus to further reduce weight of future A380s by using a range of lightweight materials that account for twenty five percent of its structure.

The Emirates A380 service will operate daily as EK222, departing Dallas/Fort Worth at 12:35hrs and arriving in Dubai at 12:20hrs the following day. EK 221 departs Dubai at 02:45hrs and arrives at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport at 09:45hrs the same day.

Ufone launches its Summer Internship Program (SIP) for 2014

Islamabad, April 17, 2014: Ufone, the premier telecom operator in Pakistan, has initiated a campus drive, to select and train youth from different top notch institutions, for yet another edition of its ‘Summer Internship Program- 2014’, after successfully conducting it in the previous years.

The Campus drive will recruit students from institutions throughout the country such as GIK, NUST, NUCES, FAST, Bahria University, UET, NED University and LUMS starting from the 12th of April and concluding on the 24th of the same month. The selection process will be rigorous besides being highly competitive and project based internships will be offered to students after initial assessments and interviews.

Expressing her views about the initiative, Syeda Kiran Altaf, Head of Recruitment at Ufone said, “SIP 2014 will be more competitive than last year; we try to give these kids as real an experience as can be, but ultimately, it’s the interns that make it a great initiative.”

Students performing well during the internships will be given certificates, shields and giveaways besides other prizes, whereas, exceptional internees will be offered a job at the organization.

Neonatal care set to receive a boost with EBM’s support

Karachi, 21st April, 2014: A major project to expand the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) was launched today. The project, fully sponsored by English Biscuit Manufacturers Private Limited (EBM) – makers of Peek Freans biscuits and the largest biscuit manufacturers in the country – will be completed by the end of this year.

The expanded state-of-the-art NICU will increase the number of beds from 12 to 24 and its proximity to the labour and delivery rooms will allow premature newborns to be transported quickly to intensive care and the specialist neonatal team. It will also be home to two physical and two airborne isolation rooms, counseling rooms, a feeding room and a family area, all designed to better serve women and their babies. Faculty offices and a teaching room will also be housed in the new space.

Premature birth is the world’s leading cause of newborn death and disability. The neonatal mortality rate, (the number of babies dying in the first 28 days after birth) is an alarming 42 per 1,000 live births in Pakistan. According to the UN report Committing to Child Survival: A Promise Renewed, Pakistan is one of five countries that account for 50 percent of global deaths of children under five years of age.

Speaking at a ceremony to launch the project, Ms Saadia Naveed, Deputy Managing Director EBM, said “EBM is acutely conscious of its corporate social responsibility and our partnership with AKU for the expansion of their NICU reflects our commitment to the welfare of society, and especially to the healthcare of our people.”

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the Aga Khan University Hospital was established in 1989 and treats an average of 600 infants every year. Many of these cases receive financial assistance as well. However, the 12-bed facility was usually filled to capacity, and the expansion was critically needed.

Mr Firoz Rasul, President AKU, also expressed his gratitude for EBM’s support: “EBM is well-known in the corporate sector in Pakistan for its very supportive CSR programmes. Funding the NICU at AKU is one such example; the lives of many premature babies will be saved as a result of this initiative.” Chartered in 1983, the Aga Khan University is a private, autonomous university that promotes human welfare through research, teaching and community service initiatives. It is one of nine agencies in the Aga Khan Development Network, a group of private development agencies with diverse mandates including health and education.
