Coke Studio Season 9 set for launch: Will feature Amjad Sabri

Friday, June 24th, 2016

Karachi, June 24, 2016: Season 9 of the signature fusion music platform Coke Studio will be remembered by fans for all time to come, as Amjad Sabri, who passed away tragically just a few days ago, will be seen performing in this Season. In what is probably the last studio recording, Amjad Sabri together with Rahat Fateh Ali Khan read the qawwali, Aj Rang Hai.

With the duo of Bilal Maqsood & Faisal Kapadia of Strings as Executive Producers, the Season will bring together multiple music directors, delivering music of different genres will bring forth the talent of some of the most accomplished and major names of the industry including Noori, Shani Arshad, Jaffer Zaidi, Shiraz Uppal, Faakhir Mehmood and Shuja Haider.

Amjad Sabri

Although Amjad Sabri did not feature in previous seasons of Coke Studio, Tajdar e Haram was performed in Season 8 last year by Atif Aslam, as a tribute to the original performers, Ghulam Farid Sabri and Maqbool Ahmed Sabri. Amjad Sabri had also helped Coke Studio on this rendition. The rendition gained worldwide fame with over 33 million views on digital media. Speaking about his kalaam during the recording in May, the late Amjad Sabri had stated, “About 40 years ago, my father and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan read this kalaam at a dargah in Karachi and 40 years later, Rahat and I are reading it again (on Coke Studio Season 9).”

“Coke Studio is the ultimate manifestation of Coca-Cola’s music strategy and Season 9 will further strengthen Coca-Cola’s cultural leadership, celebrating diversity while bridging barriers relevant to the youth of today,” stated Rizwan U. Khan, General Manager of Coca-Cola Pakistan, and added, “It is very distressing that Amjad Sabri himself will not be with all of us to see Season 9 go on air in August. His death is a huge national loss.”

The vast talent on the music direction and production side will be matched in Season 9 by a dazzling array of artists, many of whom have performed in previous Coke Studio seasons, as well as several upcoming and talented singers performing for the first time in Coke Studio. While national icons who have performed previously include the likes of Abida Parveen, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Sanam Marvi, Umair Jaswal, QB, Saieen Zahoor, Ali Azmat, Noori, Zeb Bangash, Faakhir and Meesha Shafi to name a few, the new artists include Shilpa Rao, Mehwish Hayat, Momina Mustehsan, Natasha Khan, Ali Khan, Rizwan Butt, Basit, Rachel Viccaji, Nirmal Roy and of course the maestro of qawwali, Amjad Sabri.

“We’ve always believed in collaborations because this is how the industry grows. After the monumental response of season 8, we decided to bring onboard 6 of Pakistan’s leading music directors to be a part of Coke Studio. Our vision since season 7 has been to involve more and more people from our music industry and make this platform a collective dream. When we presented the idea to Coca-Cola, they loved it and were fully supportive. It was a challenging task and our guidance was required throughout the process, but today we are extremely satisfied that we took this initiative.” Strings commented.

The unrivaled success of Coke Studio over the years in connecting deeply and emotionally with the people and especially the youth, is evident from its immense digital footprint with 6.3 million fans on Facebook, more than 170 million YouTube views and 7.5 million plus audio streams. It is viewed by fans in some 150 countries and has been exported to 20 countries. In Pakistan it has proved to be a unique platform for high profile projection of everyone associated with the music industry, including singers, back up vocalists, composers, producers, musicians and technical persons of every possible specialty, without whose invaluable contribution no Season could have been produced.

LG to Demo High HDR Capabilities of OLED TV at SES Astra Industry Day

Tuesday, June 28th, 2016

Karachi, June 28, 2016: LG Electronics (LG) is collaborating with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and satellite operator SES. to host a demonstration of High Dynamic Range (HDR) broadcast technologies at the ninth SES Industry Days conference this week in Luxembourg.

High quality HDR content will be transmitted to LG’s latest OLED TV via live satellite feed utilizing backward compatible HLG (hybrid log gamma) technology. HLG expands the contrast ratio and color reproduction capability of SDR TVs (Standard Dynamic Range). The HDR transmission demonstration by LG and the BBC will utilize SES Astra’s satellite network.

HLG technology was developed by the BBC and NHK to enable a backwards compatible transmission of HDR content. Employing a single distribution bit stream which can be decoded by both dedicated HDR receivers and legacy non-HDR receivers, the HLG system requires no production metadata, making it compatible with existing broadcast infrastructure, thereby enabling a straightforward migration to HDR television production.

SES INDUSTRY DAY

The flexibility of the BBC’s innovative HDR HLG technology makes it an excellent choice for broadcast HDR services while SES’s new HDR test channel allows industry partners to test a variety of new display standards and content. Viewed on LG’s OLED TVs, HDR HLG content looks more realistic, delivers greater depth and the deepest blacks. As the first flat-panel television with infinite contrast ratio and no backlight panels, LG OLED TVs are unrivaled in their ability to deliver an HDR experience like no other.

“LG has been at the forefront of television innovation for decades,” said Wayne Park, executive vice president and head of LG’s European operations. “We are committed to supporting the efforts of our partners to standardize HDR broadcast technologies and make advanced display technology more widely available.”

‘Every day should be Environment Day’, Rizwan U. Khan

Monday, June 6th, 2016

Lahore, June 06, 2016: ‘The world’s environment is going through an unprecedented and cataclysmic degradation which spells disaster for this planet and our future generations, and every single day of the year and not just the fifth of June should be considered as the World Environment Day,’ stated Rizwan U. Khan, General Manager Coca-Cola Pakistan, at a appraisal meeting to review the progress of the Sub-watershed Management and Environmental Conservation project being implemented in the Ayubia National Park area in partnership with the WWF-Pakistan for the past 7 consecutive years.

Coca-Cola has already invested more than half a million dollars in this project, which has positively impacted over 28,000 people of the local communities so far. The project achievements include recharging of over 566 million liters of groundwater, planting of over 140,000 indigenous trees to support reforestation, planting of another 15,000 fruit trees, conservation of 130 hectares of forest land, protection and development of 20 out of the 23 natural springs in the national park area, remodeling of water channels and construction of check dams to conserve water, installation of rainwater harvesting systems, provision of fuel efficient and solar powered stoves to reduce use of firewood, carrying out of solid waste management campaigns in local schools, and training of local women in vocational centers.

‘The world loses more than 150 acres of natural forest every single minute of every day, which comes to about 78 million acres every year,’ said Khan, and added, ‘Our country Pakistan has less than 4% land under forest, which is really alarming, as this is one of the main reasons for climate change. We should not just leave it to the government to protect and conserve the environment; instead every individual and every company must come forward to contribute. Our 7 year long association with WWF is a clear testament of how partnerships between the corporate sector and specialized NGOs can work wonders and I urge other companies too to invest more in sustainable environmental conservation programmes.’

LG Announces Startup Initiative by Spinning off Two Projects

Wednesday, June 8th, 2016

Karachi, June 07, 2016: LG Electronics (LG) is taking its “open innovation” strategy to the next level by spinning off of two initiatives originally incubated in-house: Acanvas and Infit & Company Inc. While LG will provide use of the patented technology, both companies will be managed completely by former LG employees and will be responsible for their own fundraising and strategy.

Acanvas will focus on developing its art streaming platform into a viable business. The art streaming platform contains millions of licensed works of art displayed in cord-free customizable digital frames. Acanvas just started a Kickstarter campaign (http://bit.ly/1rYG7vj) last week to fund its completion of development. Acanvas will initially target North America with plans to expand to other markets next year.

ACANVAS_1[20160516092056646] ACANVAS_2[20160516092056651] ACANVAS_3[20160516092056656]

Infit & Company Inc. is the company behind the Imaging Modular Diagnosis Machine, a medical product which employs the latest technologies to diagnose conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis. By using an affordable and safer optical imaging system instead of radiation to peer inside patients, Infit & Company Inc. hopes to revolutionize medical care.

To show its support for the venture and to alleviate a major risk associated with startups, LG has promised employees who join either of the two new companies that they will have guaranteed positions at LG if they should decide to return within three years. What’s more, LG will expand its initiatives to encourage more of the type of thinking that led to the formation of Acanvas and Infit. LG’s Idea Power Plant is one program LG has developed to identify and fund with up to 10 million Korean won the most promising employee-generated ideas that can be commercialized within five months.

“For us at LG, open innovation shouldn’t just be a motto, it should be actionable as well,” said Dr. Skott Ahn, President and CTO of LG Electronics. “By giving these two startups their own identity and freedom from the bureaucracies of a large organization, we are sending a very clear message to innovator and the public that we are not interested in maintaining the status quo.”

PPAF shares commitment to inclusion at World Humanitarian Summit

Thursday, June 9th, 2016

Karachi, June 9, 2016: Qazi Azmat Isa, CEO of the Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund, participated in the first ever World Humanitarian Summit held in Turkey. The international conference focused on multiple global humanitarian crises and was committed to supporting people who are affected by natural and man-made disasters.

After 2 years of worldwide consultations, gathering the voices and input of 23,000 people in 153 countries, more than 9,000 participants came together in Istanbul to chart the future course of humanitarian action.

In total, the Summit brought together 173 Member States, 55 Heads of State and Governments, some 350 private sector leaders, and thousands of high-level representatives from civil society and non-governmental organizations.

PPAF took the opportunity to reiterate its commitment to advancing the cause of gender equality and empowerment to ensure that women are active, informed participants in humanitarian and development assistance and action.

Qazi Isa said, “We commit to never compromise on our value of inclusion, making gender equality an article of faith – a mandatory condition of partnership with 130 civil society organizations and over 570,000 community organizations which we have fostered – ensuring that 50% of all our interventions, from women inclusion in community organizations, to cash assistance during disasters, asset transfers, microcredit loans, health and education programs are provided to women.”

PPAF has been collecting gender disaggregated data, monitoring and evaluating programmes through credible third parties to ensure that the development work is impacting women.

He also committed to overcoming barriers to women’s participation and equality through culturally sensitive approaches – using pro-women examples from religion and indigenous culture to counter misogynist narratives and practices.

At the end of the Summit, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called for commitments made to be taken forward for transformative change from the top down and from the ground up. He said, “The World Humanitarian Summit has been a unique event, in form as well as substance, dedicated to improving the humanitarian system and alleviating the suffering of millions.”

“We have the wealth, knowledge and awareness to take better care of one another. But we need action, based on the five core responsibilities of the Agenda for Humanity,” he stressed, referring to the principles that guided the hundreds of events organized at the two-day conference. The Summit called on global leadership to prevent and end conflict, uphold the norms that safeguard humanity, leave no one behind, change people’s lives – from delivering aid to ending need and to invest in humanity.

Friday, June 10th, 2016

Islamabad, June 10, 2016: In line with the true spirit of Ramzan of caring and giving, Ufone today announced a unique campaign that will shed limelight on 3 different humanitarian initiatives. This Ufone Ramzan 2016 campaign will donate free media space on television channels, newspapers, billboards and digital media to the 3 individuals, enabling them to reach out widely to the masses with their messaging seeking inspiration and support to their causes for the benefit of the deserving. Ufone has additionally also developed the content for this promotion on all mediums.

The 3 initiatives under this campaign are Operation Eid Child, Deewar-e-Mehrbani, and Khaana Ghar. All 3 initiatives have been conceived and are conducted by individuals in their personal capacities. These are being highlighted by Ufone to inspire similar ventures and to invite participation in the ongoing activities.

“The telecom industry is generally seen as spending substantially on its own media advertising, brand promotions and celebrity endorsements, but with our Ramzan 2016 campaign we have changed the paradigm by providing media projection to relatively small but highly impactful initiatives, said Rainer Rathgeber, CEO Ufone, and added, “Ufone’s brand is all about U and these organisations are a role model for such an attitude. We hope through our lead other companies too will be encouraged to come up with strategies to show ownership of social issues.”

The purpose of launching this campaign in the Holy month of Ramzan is to inspire viewers to support the vulnerable and underprivileged in their communities by either doing their own acts of generosity or by supporting the work of these three organizations. Ufone is highlighting these initiatives through a large electronic media campaign to share the message of goodness with all Pakistanis.

Ufone’s CSR focus has remained the socio-economic uplift of society, not only through its own CSR initiatives, but also through supporting committed individuals and organizations who are working selflessly for societal progress.
