Jennifer Aniston makes a new friend on Emirates

Thursday, October 6th, 2016

Golden Globe and Emmy award-winning actress returns for another adventure in her latest Emirates product campaign

DUBAI, U.A.E – 5 October 2016: Hollywood actress, director and producer Jennifer Aniston makes a return to the Emirates A380, and makes a new friend, in a new global digital and TV advertising campaign for the world’s best airline*.

The ad builds on the success of the first Emirates-Jennifer Aniston ad launched last year, a much talked-about campaign which quickly went viral.

In a similar vein to the first light-hearted TVC, the Golden Globe and Emmy award-winning actress brings her distinctive personality, classic style, and a touch of humour, to showcase the A380. In the ad, Jennifer befriends Cooper, a feisty young boy who she finds playing in her Private Suite in the Emirates First Class cabin, while she was freshening up in the Shower Spa.

The two strike up a conversation and build rapport, as they stroll through Emirates’ Business Class cabin and Onboard Lounge. Sitting on the stairs between the lower and upper decks of the aircraft, Cooper tells Jennifer about his aspirations to become a pilot – of ‘this plane’, pointing to his model Emirates A380 aircraft. In Economy Class, Cooper is finally reunited with his surprised parents where Jennifer chooses to remain and enjoy Emirates’ ice inflight entertainment system with Cooper. The ad ends with Cooper’s mother relaxing in Jennifer’s Private Suite, having exchanged places with the Hollywood star.

Boutros Boutros, Emirates’ Divisional Senior Vice President, Corporate Communications, Marketing & Brand explained: “A year ago, when we launched our first ad featuring Jennifer Aniston, we were overwhelmed by what a social phenomenon it became. The humour resonated with audiences around the world, and the ad was viewed by millions of people, generating thousands of conversations. Fans of both Emirates and Jennifer loved her effortless charm and humour, and enjoyed a story that deviated from traditional airline advertising.

“We were overrun with requests to see Jennifer again. She has an enduring, universal appeal that is at once sophisticated, but also down to earth – a great match for our brand. This new ad perfectly captures the fun, spontaneity and glamour of flying on Emirates, and we are confident audiences will find it as memorable as the first.”

The TVC was directed by industry veteran and Oscar-nominee Bryan Buckley, who is acclaimed for his numerous Super Bowl ads. The script and creative concept was a collaboration between Buckley and Emirates’ in-house advertising team and produced in conjunction with the WPP Group.

The TVC can be viewed on the Emirates website or on the Emirates YouTube channel, Facebook page, Twitter and Instagram. Fans can join the conversation using the tag #JensBack.

LG Announces Third-Quarter 2016 Financial Results

Friday, October 28th, 2016

Karachi, October 28, 2016 ― LG Electronics Inc. (LG) today announced third-quarter 2016 sales of KRW 13.2 trillion (USD 11.8 billion) and operating income of KRW 283.2 billion (USD 252.7 million), reflecting strong performance of its Home Appliance & Air Solution business and increased profitability in Home Entertainment, which offset sales declines and operating losses from Mobile Communications.

LG Home Appliance & Air Solution Company third-quarter revenue increased 3 percent year-over-year with its strongest performance coming from European and Asian markets. Operating income of KRW 342.8 billion (USD 305.9 million) resulted in a solid operating margin of 8 percent, a 40 percent improvement from the same period last year. Strong performance of air conditioners and premium appliances helped profitability, despite unfavorable currency fluctuations in MEA and Latin American countries.

LG Mobile Communications Company third-quarter revenues were KRW 2.5 trillion (USD 2.3 billion), 23 percent lower than in the same period of 2015. Lower sales of premium devices and expenses related to business structure improvement activities contributed to a quarterly operating loss of KRW 436.4 billion (USD 389.4 million). LG shipped 13.5 million smartphones in the quarter, with North America reporting a 14 percent increase in sales from the second quarter. Priorities for the final quarter of the year will include increasing sales of the new LG V20 smartphone and mass-tier K and X series and finalizing business structural improvements in the mobile division to be better prepared for the challenges ahead.

LG Home Entertainment Company reported the highest operating profit and margin in its history with KRW 381.5 billion (USD 340.4 million) and 9.2 percent, respectively, as sales of premium LG OLED and Ultra HD TVs continued to gain traction in key markets around the world. Due to price erosion driven by intense competition, sales declined by 3.4 percent from last year’s third quarter with revenues of KRW 4.1 trillion (USD 3.7 billion) nearly unchanged from the previous quarter. With the peak holiday selling season ahead, overall demand for TV products is expected to increase although profitability will likely be affected by higher material costs and increased marketing investments.

LG Vehicle Components Company saw a strong increase in third-quarter sales to KRW 674.9 billion (USD 602.2 million), for an increase of 41 percent year-over-year and 6 percent from the previous quarter. The company reported a modest operating loss of KRW 16.2 billion (USD 14.5 million) due primarily to increased R&D investments to support future growth. With more and more electric vehicle projects – led by the GM Bolt – on the horizon, the VC Company expects to see continued growth.

2016 3Q Exchange Rates Explained
LG Electronics’ unaudited quarterly earnings results are based on IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards) for the three-month period ending September 30, 2016. Amounts in Korean won (KRW) are translated into U.S. dollars (USD) at the average rate of the three-month period of the corresponding quarter ― KRW 1,162 per USD.

Red meat, including beef and mutton, constitutes the largest share of perishables exported from Pakistan through Emirates SkyCargo. The carrier transported more than 11,400 tonnes of red meat from the period April to September 2016. Dubai is a major export destination for red meat from Pakistan. White meat, including fresh fish and crabs, are also important perishable commodities that are exported via Emirates Sky Cargo. Over 1,600 tonnes of fish have been transported since April this year, with Dubai and Kuwait being the main destinations. Emirates SkyCargo also moved over 600 tonnes of crabs from Pakistan in the same period.

As for exports of fruits from the country, mangoes enjoy the highest share. Considered the ‘king’ of fruits, mango is a specialty export product of Pakistan and has a major contribution to the overall economy of the country. The country is the fifth leading global producer of mangoes. Pakistani mangoes are high in fibre content, low on calorie count and also contain adequate amounts of nutrition, making them one of the most sought after fruits around the world.

Emirates SkyCargo transported Pakistani mangoes to destinations where they are much in demand including in the US and Europe. The carrier transported close to a thousand tonne of mangoes to London alone this year. The Middle East also receives a large share of mango exports from Pakistan.

Other than mangoes, the total export of fruits and vegetables from Pakistan via Emirates Sky Cargo accounts to up to 1,500 tons this year.

Food shipments have to be temperature controlled end to end in order to ensure freshness and quality and Emirates SkyCargo has superior cool chain capabilities to connect two very distant points on the globe for temperature sensitive perishables. Emirates SkyCargo operates state-of-the-art cargo facilities at its dual hub locations in Dubai International Airport and Dubai World Central (DWC). Both terminals offer extensive cool chain facilities for the handling and transportation of temperature sensitive products. Emirates SkyCentral at DWC has over 15,000 sq. metres of space dedicated to cool chain shipments.

Emirates SkyCargo is the largest international airline cargo operator in the world with a fleet of 250 aircraft, including 15 dedicated freighters- 13 Boeing 777-Fs and two B747-400ERFs.

PMIC Launch Ceremony held

Friday, October 28th, 2016

Islamabad, October 28, 2016: The launch ceremony for the Pakistan Microfinance Investment Company Limited (PMIC) was held at the Prime Minister Office. A specialized, for-profit wholesale investment finance company, PMIC was established to fund the expansion of microfinance in Pakistan. It is the first publically funded, privately managed, commercial development finance institution dedicated to accelerate the development of microfinance in Pakistan. PMIC will build on the strong platform developed by the Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund over the last 15 years and establish a well-capitalized for-profit wholesale finance business that will provide sustainable funding to retail MFIs through links with commercial credit and capital markets.

PMIC’s role is to finance retail microfinance banks and nonbank for-profit and nonprofit microfinance providers (MFIs) to support broad-based economic and employment growth in Pakistan. The Company is mandated to provide a broad range of financial services, including senior and subordinated credit lines, other investment services and to make equity-linked investments in retail MFIs. PMIC will also offer technical assistance to support the institutional strengthening of retail MFIs to build and manage greater operating scale.

PMIC is incorporated as a public limited company under the Companies Ordinance and regulated by the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan. PMIC is also a cornerstone of the Government of Pakistan’s National Financial Inclusion Strategy (NFIS) launched in May 2015, which is a national-level policy framework designed to promote financial inclusion by deepening access to finance for micro entrepreneurs and micro enterprises.

PMIC has been created by the Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund, the leading non-profit apex funder for microfinance, Karandaaz Pakistan, a nonprofit company setup to promote small business lending and digital financial services with funding from the United Kingdom Department for International Development (DFID), and KfW (the international German Development Bank).

Mr. Thomas Drew, High Commissioner of United Kingdom, Ms. Ina Lepel, Ambassador of Germany, Ms. Joanna Reid, Head of Office DFID Pakistan, Mr. Wolfgang Mollers, KfW, and Mr. Zubyr Soomro, Chairman, PMIC Board of Directors also addressed the audience.

Mr. Qazi Azmat Isa, CEO of PPAF, said, “The PMIC is a game changer for financial inclusion in Pakistan. PPAF was an integral part of the development of the microfinance sector and the PMIC is going to move the sector to the next level.  Financial inclusion is critical to achieve inclusive growth and it is a pre requisite for sustainable economic growth and development, reducing inequality and mitigating poverty. PMIC will build upon the foundations PPAF laid fifteen years ago by providing responsible financial services to the millions of poor and financially excluded individuals of Pakistan.”

The ceremony was chaired by the Honourable Minister for Finance, Revenue, Economic Affairs, Statistics and Privatization, Mr. Muhammad Ishaq Dar. He emphasized the importance of accelerating microfinance in the country and called the inception of PMIC a vital step in advancing towards financial inclusion in Pakistan.

He said, “In Pakistan the microfinance sector has spread throughout the country on the back of an enabling policy framework provided by the State Bank of Pakistan and SECP, and the creation of PPAF in 1997 by the PML (N) government. With years of hard work, the microfinance sector now serves 4.2 million borrowers, 15.8 million savers and 5.5 million policy holders. Today the microfinance industry in Pakistan has been rated as one of the best in the world by the Economist’s Intelligence Unit. The PMIC is an important milestone in the National Financial Inclusion Strategy approved in 2015 and will serve the needs of an even larger group of people.”

The event was closed with remarks from Mr. Shahid Mustafa, CEO PMIC, who thanked all the participants and expressed the hope that PMIC would make a positive mark in the microfinance domain in the near future.
